Bury St Edmunds RFC U15s

Suffolk Cup starts successfully

Bury St Edmunds 40 – Ipswich 10

Bury St Edmunds, sponsored by Partridge and Wilson were matched by the visitors in an even start and it was Ipswich who scored first with an unconverted try after nine minutes.  Although they had the stronger scrum, Bury were second to, and less aggressive at, breakdowns giving them less ball than they wished but flanker and captain Sam Hunt’s quick thinking at a penalty levelled the scores after 15 minutes and Bury edged ahead with the conversion.

Bury’s far more incisive backs were now opening up Ipswich and winger James Copping got his first try after great hands from his team mates.  His second came after Sam stole the ball in his own 22, kicked through along the touchline and James touched down.  An excellent conversion from full back Andrew Devoy put Bury well ahead but a late Ipswich try reduced the half time deficit to 19-10.

A feisty start to the second half fired up both sides in what was proving a bruising encounter.  Bury’s slick handling saw James grab his hat trick after 38 minutes.  Sam got his second try soon after following good work by flanker Will Horsnell and centre Jack Deeming finished the try when scoring near the end of the game.  Andrew Devoy landed all three conversions.  Determined Bury defence closed Ipswich out completely in the second half and contributed to a fine Suffolk Cup win.

Business In The Community "Awards for Excellence" 2011

The “Business In The Community Awards for Excellence” are stated to be “…the most credible, influential and well-established national awards for responsible business. They recognise the most exciting and innovative examples of responsible business practice, and celebrate those companies that can demonstrate evidence of their positive impact on people and the planet.”

We submitted an entry for the “Pro Bono Company of the Year” award based upon the free advice and assistance that we have given to various community projects but in particular the Elmswell Community Wood (“Lukeswood”) organisation.

We were therefore absolutely delighted to have been “Highly Commended” in this category given that this was the first time that we had entered the awards and the standard that was required. We are truly honoured to have been recognised in this way.

The award was presented to Clare Dawson and Martin Pratley at a dinner on the 14th June at Hengrave Hall which gave us the opportunity to mingle with some of the largest regional firms such as Aviva, Cambridge University Press, Ridgeons, Anglian Water to name but a few.

We had not expected to receive an award and saw the event as a chance to meet other companies and to share ides and experiences in order to improve on the community work that we undertake.

To have left with an award really was the icing on the cake and has provided us with a great deal of positive exposure as the only law firm to have received an award and the only firm based in Bury St Edmunds to have been recognised.

Presidency for Martin

We are delighted to announce that partner, Martin Pratley, has been appointed as President of the Colchester Rugby Football Club.

The appointment is in recognition of Martin's services to the club where he has held the posts of  Chairman of the Club's Mini Rugby section and Safeguarding Officer. Martin is also a Safeguarding Manager for the Eastern Counties Rugby Football Union.

The role will see Martin acting as both an ambassador for the club as well as being involved with the club's management.

We are pleased to confirm that this appointment will not affect our ongoing sponsorship of Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club which Martin concedes does make for some "interesting banter" when Bury teams play Colchester!

Martin has started a blog regarding his presidency which you are invited to follow. The blog may be found at;

The Decanter

We are delighted to have acted for Karen Gooding in her acquisition of "The Decanter" restaurant on Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds and wish he every success with the business.

Karen writes of the service provided by P&W:

"I just wanted to say a huge "thank you" for all your help with our purchase of "The Decanter." From the first 'phone conversation with yourself I felt relaxed and confident that you were going to act on my behalf both professionally and on a level that I could understand and appreciate.

Everything was done and completed on time and the communication was excellent. You made everything seem less complicated and it all went through amazingly quickly and smoothly.

I will ceratinly be recommending you."

We are grateful to Karen for her kind words as client recommendation is a valuable source of business for us.

Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club Sponsorship

We are delighted to confirm that we will be sponsoring the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club's Under 14 team for the season 2011 / 2012.

The club is a community rugby club and provides an opportunity for players of all ages and abilities t take part in the game. The all weather pitch and recent Clubhouse refurbishment (which contains a gym and extended changing facilities) have added greatly to the facilities that the club has to offer.

The game of rugby received a well-earned boost when the England team won the 2003 World Cup. This boost has very much continued and has resulted in clubs all over the country benefiting from increased membership of players of all ages.

With this increase in numbers comes a need for community clubs (which are run almost entirely by volunteers) to raise funds in order to provide the facilities that are required. This is where we, and others, come in.

Our Martin Pratley, who has negotiated the sponsorship, is, himself, involved in the administration of rugby in the Eastern Counties being a County Child Safeguarding Officer for Suffolk and North Essex as well as a referee, coach and (ageing!) player.

Martin says "the increase in the number of young people taking up rugby has been phenomenal over the past few years. The game is no longer the "elitist" sport that it was once perceived as being and young people, both boys and girls, from all backgrounds, are entering the game. I feel that we should help in whatever way we can to help promote the efforts of sports clubs such as Bury RFC so that they may continue to thrive. I would invite anybody who is interested to go along to the club when junior games are taking place and witness the enthusiasm and dedication exhibited by the players and the volunteer coaches and others who help run the game."
